Leo No. 8 (Strong Brew) Review: The Intense Upgrade

If the original Leo is the “everyday” beer, then Leo No. 8 (the “Strong Brew”) is its more serious older brother. Launched by Boon Rawd Brewery to bridge the gap between easy-drinking lagers and more flavorful beers, it has quickly gained a following among those who want more than just a refreshing water-like drink. For me, this is where the industrial lagers actually start to get interesting.

The Tasting Notes (The 3.4 Analysis)

At 3.4 out of 5, this is currently the highest-rated beer in our series. Here is why it beats the original Leo (3.1) and Chang (2.9):

  • The Flavor: As the name suggests, the taste is significantly more intense. While the standard Leo focuses on being “smooth,” the No. 8 has a much stronger malt presence. You actually feel the grain on your palate.
  • The Body: It has a “thicker” mouthfeel. It doesn’t disappear instantly like its lighter counterpart; it lingers just enough to let you enjoy the malt profile.
  • Aroma: You get a more pronounced hoppy aroma here. It’s still an industrial lager, so don’t expect an IPA explosion, but there’s a floral, grassy note that is missing in the cheaper versions.
  • Balance: Despite the “Strong Brew” label, it isn’t harsh. It manages to increase the intensity without adding that metallic, alcoholic burn that sometimes plagues other “strong” beers.

Why it’s a 3.4

It earns a 3.4 because it solves the “watery” problem of the original Leo while maintaining a clean finish. It’s still an industrial product, but it’s a more sophisticated one. If you are a craft beer fan (who usually looks for a 4.1), this is likely the closest you’ll get to a “real beer” feel in the standard 7-Eleven fridge section.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Enhanced Flavor: A much richer profile than the standard “Big 3” (Leo, Chang, Singha).
  • Great with Food: Its intensity allows it to stand up to heavy, saucy Thai dishes like Massaman Curry or Khao Soi.
  • Premium Feel: Even the black and red design of the can feels a step up from the basic labels.

Cons:

  • Availability: Not every single 7-Eleven carries the No. 8; sometimes you have to check the larger branches.
  • Price: It’s usually a few Baht more expensive than the regular version, though the jump in quality is worth it.

FAQ

How is it different from the regular Leo? The regular Leo is designed for maximum “drinkability” (very light, low bitterness). The No. 8 is brewed for “intensity,” using a slightly different malt blend to achieve a bolder taste.

Does the “8” mean 8% alcohol? No! This is a common mistake. The alcohol content is actually around 5.1% to 5.2%. The “8” is part of the branding, likely a lucky number in many Asian cultures, rather than an alcohol indicator.

Is it better cold or with ice? Unlike the regular Leo, which almost needs ice to stay refreshing, I recommend drinking Leo No. 8 straight from the chilled can or glass. It has enough flavor to stand on its own without being diluted.

Final Verdict

Leo No. 8 is a solid 3.4/5. It’s the best “upgrade” you can find in the mass-market section of 7-Eleven. If you’re tired of watery lagers but aren’t ready to pay 100+ Baht for a craft IPA, this is your best friend in the cooler.
