TrueMoney for Foreigners: How to Pay via QR Code Anywhere in Thailand (Even 7-Eleven!)

If you’ve lived in Chiang Mai or traveled through Bangkok, you’ve probably seen locals paying for everything—from street food to Chicken Wings—by simply scanning a QR code. For years, this was nearly impossible for foreigners without a local bank account. But that has changed! TrueMoney, the biggest e-wallet in the country, now officially allows foreigners to register and scan any Thai QR code to pay at millions of shops, including your favorite 7-Eleven.

How to Register as a Foreigner

Gone are the days when you needed a work permit just to have digital money. Now, you can sign up using your Driver’s License or Passport.

  1. Download the App: Look for “TrueMoney” in the App Store or Play Store.
  2. Verify Identity: Upload a photo of your ID (Foreigners are now successfully using their driver’s licenses for this).
  3. Top Up: You can add cash to your wallet at any 7-Eleven cashier—just show them your barcode and give them the cash.

Why This is a Game Changer for 7-Eleven Fans

TrueMoney is deeply integrated with 7-Eleven. Instead of fumbling with coins for your Meiji Milk or Wangwan Medicated Oil, you just show your QR code. Plus, you can link it to your All Member account to earn points on every purchase, which you can later use as a discount for more Ham & Cheese Toasties.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Convenience: No more carrying heavy coins or bulky wallets.
  • Widely Accepted: Works from luxury malls to tiny fruit stalls on the street.
  • Safety: If you lose your phone, your money is protected by a PIN and biometrics, unlike lost cash.

Cons:

  • Phone Dependency: If your battery dies, you can’t pay. Make sure your phone is charged!
  • Verification Time: Sometimes the ID verification can take a few hours to be approved.

Final Verdict

TrueMoney for foreigners is a 5/5. It is the most important “digital tool” you can have in Thailand right now. It levels the playing field and lets you live like a local. Whether you are buying Soffel Mosquito Repellent or paying for a Tuk-Tuk, this app is an absolute must-have.
