Who Owns 7-Eleven in Thailand? The Business Behind the Franchise

If you have spent more than five minutes in any Thai city, you have undoubtedly noticed that 7-Eleven is not just a convenience store chain—it is a central pillar of daily infrastructure. From Bangkok’s busy intersections to quiet islands like Koh Samui, you will often see two or three locations operating within eyesight of each other.

With over 14,500 locations nationwide, Thailand hosts the second-largest number of 7-Eleven stores in the world, trailing only Japan. But who actually operates this massive retail engine?

Here is the complete breakdown of corporate ownership, the master franchise agreement, and how one conglomerate turned 7-Eleven into a dominant Thai business empire.

The Core Owner: CP All and CP Group

In Thailand, 7-Eleven is owned and operated by CP All Public Company Limited (CP All), which serves as the sole master franchisee.

CP All itself is the retail flagship subsidiary of Charoen Pokphand Group (CP Group), Thailand’s largest private conglomerate and one of the world’s largest business empires.

Key Corporate Facts:

  • Parent Conglomerate: Charoen Pokphand Group (CP Group)
  • Operating Subsidiary: CP All Public Company Limited
  • Key Figure: Dhanin Chearavanont (Senior Chairman of CP Group)
  • Master Franchise Grantor: Seven-Eleven, Inc. (Subsidiary of Seven & i Holdings Co., Ltd., Japan)
  • Year Established in Thailand: 1989 (First branch opened on Patpong Road, Bangkok)

How CP Group Acquired the License

The story began in 1988 when Charoen Pokphand Group signed a sole master franchise agreement with the original US-based Southland Corporation (now Seven-Eleven, Inc., which is wholly owned by the Japanese retail giant Seven & i Holdings).

CP Group recognized that Thailand’s rapid urbanization in the late 1980s created a massive demand for modern, air-conditioned, 24-hour retail. The first location opened in 1989 in Bangkok. By the late 1990s, the brand was expanding exponentially across all 77 provinces.

Today, CP All holds the exclusive license to operate, franchise, and market 7-Eleven throughout the Kingdom of Thailand.

Corporate Integration: Why CP All Controls the Supply Chain

One reason 7-Eleven in Thailand feels distinct from its Western counterparts is the deep vertical integration of CP Group.

CP Group is an agribusiness and food production titan. This corporate relationship explains why you see specific brands dominating 7-Eleven shelves:

  • CP Ready Meals: The chilled fried rice, pad kra pao, and pork dishes in the refrigerator aisle are manufactured directly by CP Foods.
  • CP Meats & Sausages: The hot dogs, ham slices, and bacon strips used in 7-Eleven’s famous toasted sandwiches are produced in-house by CP processing plants.
  • Meiji Dairy: CP Group formed a joint venture with Japan’s Meiji Co. (CP-Meiji) to produce and distribute milk, yogurts, and dairy products stocked nationwide.
  • TrueMove H: CP Group owns True Corporation, one of Thailand’s top telecommunications networks. This is why TrueMove SIM cards, top-up vouchers, and bill payments dominate counter services.

Franchise vs. Corporate-Owned Stores

While CP All owns the master franchise rights, not every individual store is directly operated by corporate headquarters.

The network uses a hybrid business model:

  1. Corporate-Owned Stores (~55%): Managed directly by CP All to test new layouts, inventory tech, and high-density locations.
  2. Franchise Stores (~45%): Operated by local Thai entrepreneurs or property owners under strict CP All operational guidelines, supply chain contracts, and revenue-sharing agreements.

Summary

When you buy an iced coffee from All Café, purchase a hot toastie, or pay your electricity bill at the cashier, you are interacting with CP All, under the umbrella of CP Group. Through aggressive supply chain integration, master licensing, and local franchising, CP Group turned 7-Eleven into an indispensable part of daily Thai life.
